Most of his Gary's Waltrip friends lost track of him many years ago and there had been rumors of his death in the 1980s. I was sorry to receive the message actually confirming his death.
Whatever the circumstances were in his adult life, Gary was my boyhood friend. We were classmates, teammates and buddies. He was a dedicated and gifted athlete and he had a great sense of humor. I hope that Gary was at peace when he died and that maybe he gave the friends of his youth a fleeting last thought. If he did, I hope I was among them.
