He was one of the good guys!
I am sure he will be missed by his family and friends and family. I remember at Waltrip he was close to Lynn Howden who recently passed and they are both in a special place perhaps discussing the 67 Rams!
God bless!

I became very good friends with Gil at Oak Forest elementary in the 4th grade and stayed close friends through high school.I remember he never wanted to talk about his dad being Mayor of Houston for some reason. Perhaps he wanted to be known for just being Gil. We lost track after high school but later in the early 90's we hooked up again and got to know each other again. I had a boat that I kept at Seabrook marina and we took it out in the bay several times and had some good times together then.Unfortunately we lost track of each other after that and never got together again . I was so sorry to hear about his passing and wish I had seen him again before he was gone.Gil will be missed

Gil was one of the sweetest guys. He was so kind and seemed to ignore gossip, treating everyone equally, as he knew them to be, not as others said. Several of us Guard Girls were to put signs in his yard before a football game, only to be chased off because we got too close to the house. His dad was mayor at the time, so I assume it was security? We did manage to get the signs up, but close to the street. A graduation party at his house was one of the best. He and Sherry were already in love and that was so obvious. What a wonderful and true love story to share with their children and grandchildren. I am certain Sherry and her family will miss him every day, remembering him with smiles and love.

Gil was a great guy. Our senior year he would give me a ride to school every day. I remember his little Volkswagen bug. It was a very cool car. I remember one day I had a knock at my door opened it and there was a cop standing there. I thought I was in trouble until he started laughing and turned. Gilford was standing there to explain that his volts wagon broke down and his dad's driver had to take us to school. Gill was a great guy and treated everyone with dignity and respect no matter who you were you came from. Rest in peace Gil. God Bless

FYI - I updated Steven Baker's comment from March 14, 2023 on Page 1 of these comments to include a LINK to a neat video shown by KHOU TV on July 19, 2019.  There is also a great photo of our "19 year old" Gil in the video.

Sad to see this about Gil.   He and I took driver's ed together down on Blogget street close to Herman Park.   His Dad who was Mayor of Houston at that time picked us up one night after behind the wheel and on the way home called Warren McVay who was the best running back in the state from San Antonio to invited him to come to Houston and join the Houston Cougars and the rest is history.

Gill was a good friend.

That video is SO COOL! Love the picture of young Gil. But the newscasters kept mentioning him--Uncle Gil this and Uncle Gil that--why didn't they have him on the show?!

It is so sad when one of those special friends from our youth leaves us.   Gill and I were in homeroom at Black and shared so many classes at Black and Waltrip....being "W"s we were always at the end of the line or the back corner of the room.  Gill always had a smile to share with everyone and kind, laughing eyes that made it a joy to be around him.   I haven't seen Gill since the reunion, but he will always be one who reminds me of good times and pleasant memories.   Prayers for God's love and comfort to hold and surround Gill's loving family and friends as they miss and remember him.  Barbara Wilson Watson

I'm shocked and saddened by the news of Gil's passing. He was such a wonderful person. My sympathy goes out to Sherry and his family and also to all of you who knew and loved Gil for all these years. May he rest in the loving arms of Jesus.  I will see him again one day when it's my time.

Gil Welch passed away on Sunday, March 12, 2023 at the age of 73 after a battle with cancer.

Like so many who have expressed their love and great memories of Gil, I too am sadden of his passing.  There would be a time when I would not say the following – “so young.”  Yet passing at 73 years old is young.  When I first read he had passed – I said out loud – “What a great guy.”  So, I would like to share what a nice – great guy he was back in the day.  Gil was a great guy.

It was a time at Black Junior High and it was lunch time.  I believe I remember these three guys at a table practicing how to calculate on a “slide rule.”  The three guys were Gil, Hayden Watson and Tim Duff.  I know it is hard to believe, but I did not know what a slide rule was and why I needed to know.  Gil was very kind and tried to show me - with a smile.  I did not get it and I found out how much I should have listened when I was in Chemistry Class at Waltrip.  Gil was a great guy.

The second memory to share was during our jr. football season.  Gil and I spent a great deal of time riding the bench during that season.  I can only believe that Coach Burton did not recognize our athletic ability.  We always pulled for each – yet I always wanted to be in the game.  He wrote in my 1966 Yearbook – “we are competitors, good luck, and we will help pull each other thru.”  Gi was a great guy.

Another football walk down memory lane.  As some of you remember – many of football team would show up at school in August and work-out.  These workouts were without coaches – yet we worked hard and it was hot.  Gil and I needed a ride home after our morning work-out.  Buzz Fowler offered us a ride.  When we got to Gil’s house he said – “do you guys want to come in and have a ‘power milkshake.’” We said yes.  We went in the mayor’s house and Gil got out the milk, the malted powder and the power protein powder and the ice cream.  Yes – ice cream.  Then he got out a blender.  That was so cool because we did not own a blender.  The power milkshake was wonderful.  Gil was a great guy.

One more great memory.  Pam Roesler Lemoine has already mentioned the graduation party – hi Pam.  It was a great graduation party – food and (soft) drink, a live band, and at the mayor’s house with all our great friends.  This was the crazy thing that happened at the party.  The Houston police showed up to inform Mayor Welch that someone in the neighborhood complained about the traffic and noise.  Mayor Welch came out in the backyard and asked us to keep it down.  He said it is not good when the police have to come to the mayor’s house because of a disturbance.  We settled down, for awhile. . .  We were happy and grateful for the party.  Gil was a great guy.

One last item to cover.  Gayla Harvey Lambert – hi Gayla - informed us in her comments that she will see Gil again – meaning - they will see each other in Heaven.  I just saw a message from Pat that Gil’s wife Sherry Miheim Welch is doing fine.  Pat reported that Sherry is confident she will see Gil again because of their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. Wow!  What a great testimony.  Gil was a great guy and he will be missed and many of us will see him again.  God Bless - gbm
