I graduated from UT Austin in 1972 with a BSEE. Worked a couple of years in Houston and then went to law school. I lived for three years in Los Angeles (1979-1982) and 20 years in Washington, D.C. (1977-1979 and 1982-2000). Earned a masters degree in taxation while in D.C. and studied economics, accounting, political management, and real estate development as well.

From the time I finished law school, few women were interested in me. After the fall of the Soviet Union, I learned that Russian and Ukrainian girls were interested in meeting American men, even men who were significantly older. I visited 13 wonderful young women in Russia and Ukraine in 1998, and eventually fell in love with Irina who was living in St. Petersburg, Russia. She came to America in late 1999 and we soon married (first marriage for both of us). We now have three young children and live in the northern suburbs of Dallas. Irina loves the hot Texas weather after growing up in snowy Russia.

I've been able to trace my ancestry back 1000 years and 27 generations before me. With my father as the first generation before me, the 26th generation before me was Oliver Wise who was living in England at the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066. The Wise family came to England from Saxony probably in the ninth or tenth century. In the 27th generation was Robert de Veteripont and Ernold de Busili, both Normans who joined William, Duke of Normandy, in the invasion of England. The Busili family married into the Veteripont family four generations later, and the Veteripont family married into the Wise family one generation later. In the 21st generation back, Robert de Scardeburg was an English judge in Ireland. This line is filled with lawyers and is probably where I got my desire to be a lawyer. Nine generations and 240 years later, Robert's descendant, Capt. Edmund Scarborough (spelling was flexible until recently) owned several ships sailing between England and Virginia around 1622. Edmund was one of the first burgesses of the newly formed Virginia House of Burgesses. His daughter, Lady Hannah Scarborough, came to America and married my ancestor, John Wise, who had sailed from England to Virginia in 1635 alone at the age of 18. They had six children, of whom I descend from the second son, William. Over the next 200 years and six generations, the family migrated south into the Carolinas, Georgia, and eventually Alabama. My grandfather came to Texas as a young man, and met and married my grandmother there. We have also traced all of my mother's family (Pearson) back more than 200 years to England, Scotland and France. Wise is derived from the old Saxon word gwiss, which means to know or to be certain.

This is a student recital brochure from April 23, 1960 that I recently found among things my parents saved. It is from the Oak Forest Music Studios (Patsy Swayze's old dance/music studio). I notice a lot of names from the class of 1967, some no longer with us. I did an accordion number with three other students at this recital. While I always enjoyed music and enjoyed singing with the Waltrip choir (1965-66), my accordion lessons gave me a lifelong aversion to any sort of accordion music. I hope classmates named in the program don't mind me posting it here, and I hope the view can be expanded to read all the names.

I am very sad to hear of Emil's passing.  I knew Emil and his father primarily through baseball.  Emil was a year older than me.  In the summer of 1961, Emil and I played for the Giants at the Oaks Dads Club.  Mr. Michal was the coach and my father was the assistant coach (my father became the coach in the summer of 1962).  I remember that my father greatly respected Mr. Michal and had a good working relationship with him.  We had a good team and had a lot of fun that year.  I later played with Emil on the Waltrip baseball team in 1967 when he was a senior.  He was the starting second baseman as I remember.  Emil was always friendly with me.  He was a good athlete and he was clearly a very intelligent person.  I did not know Emil after he graduated from Waltrip but it seems that he had a useful and happy life.  My condolences to all of his family and friends.

Great photos from the mini-reunion, Pat. Thanks for posting them. It was fun to see photos of some people I remember from the class one year ahead of me.

November 2011 - David, me, Irina, Katya, and baby Anna. It's surprisingly difficult to get two adults and three children to all look the same direction, smile, and not blink. This is the best we could do.

Summer 2013 - Katya (9), Annie (2), and Dave (almost 6) in a park in Gatchina, Russia, where they were visiting their grandparents and great-grandmother (a survivor of the Siege of Leningrad) for a couple of months this summer. The kids speak English at home with us, but are fluent in Russian.

Summer 2013 - Katya in Russia. She's about to enter fourth grade. She's as smart as she is pretty.

Summer 2013 - Dave in Russia. He will go into first grade this Fall. He loves sports - plays soccer, football, and baseball. He's learning basketball. He's very smart, too. I didn't think he was ready for his school's gifted program but the teacher contacted me and told me he'd made a perfect score on the entry test. Shows how smart I am, I suppose.

Summer 2013 - Sweet Annie sitting outside her Russian grandmother's house. She's very serious here, but is usually laughing and running after the older two kids. Very inquisitive girl - always exploring the house. She's 2 now.

Irina and me 2010. Irina is Russian. She speaks accented but fluent English. Finding her and getting to know her and bringing her to America was the adventure of my life. She was one of 13 Russian and Ukrainian girls I visited in 1998 and 1999.

David and me 2009. Dave smiles all the time but, for some reason, he doesn't like to smile for the camera. We don't know why.

Stevens Elementary School (Houston) - 1955 to 1956 school year. My kindergarten class with our teacher, Mrs. Wildson. I'm on the lower standing row - third from the left. I had a big unreciprocated crush on the girl sitting third from the right. She lived down the street from me until her family moved to another part of Houston after elementary school. Years later, her father (a lawyer) was one of my sponsors for admission to the Texas bar.
